Better Server List FAQ

Where are my old servers?

In a list called Servers, in the same order as before. The first time the screen opens it imports everything from the vanilla server list. Rename the list or spread the servers over new lists and categories however you like.

Does the server need the mod?

No. It only changes your multiplayer screen, so every player who wants it installs it (plus Mycel) on their own client. You can join any server, vanilla or modded, as usual.

How do I get the vanilla screen back?

Click Vanilla at the bottom right. The vanilla screen stays until you return to the title screen, and a Better list button in its corner takes you back. To always start with the vanilla screen, set replaceScreen to false; see configuration.

What happens if I uninstall it?

Nothing is lost. Every change is also written to the vanilla servers.dat, so the vanilla list shows all your servers, one entry per address, in the order of your lists. Categories, pins and notes stay in config/betterserverlist-servers.json in case you come back.

I added a server with the vanilla screen. Where is it?

At the end of your first list. Each time the screen opens, servers that are in servers.dat but in none of your lists are added there, so servers from the vanilla screen or from a modpack's servers.dat never get lost.

I deleted a server in the vanilla screen and it came back.

Better Server List keeps its own lists and writes them to servers.dat, so a server removed only with the vanilla screen is put back. Delete it in Better Server List instead.

Can a server be in two lists?

Yes. Drag it onto another list with Ctrl held, or use Copy to list from its menu. Each copy has its own category, pin and note, and the server is pinged only once.

Why can't I drag servers into a new order?

Reordering needs the Manual sort, with an empty search and Online only off. With another sort the order comes from the sort, so a drop only moves the server into the section you drop it on. Click Sort until it says Manual.

A server shows a red cross.

The ping failed: the address does not exist, or the server is offline or blocks status pings. Refresh (or F5) tries again. You can still join; the cross only reports the last ping.

Can I share my list with friends?

Yes. Right-click the list, choose Copy servers as text, and send the text. Your friend right-clicks one of their lists and chooses Paste servers. Pasting also accepts plain addresses, one per line.

Can I turn it off without uninstalling?

Yes. Set enabled to false in config/betterserverlist.json and run /mycel reload betterserverlist, or restart. Multiplayer opens the vanilla screen until you flip it back, and your lists are kept.
