Features
Hidden behind walls
Vanilla skips whole 16x16x16 sections you cannot see, but everything inside a section you can see is drawn, even a storage room or an item frame wall behind solid stone. Bread casts rays from your camera to the corners and center of every mob, chest, sign and item frame on a background thread. If no ray gets past solid blocks, the thing is not drawn. Anything not checked yet counts as visible, so nothing pops out of existence while you turn. Players, glowing mobs, very large mobs, anything right next to you and beacon beams are never hidden. If the Entity Culling mod is installed, Bread leaves this to it.
Less detail far away
- Item frames, paintings and armor stands are not drawn past 64 blocks, dropped items and XP orbs past 48, signs, banners and heads past 32.
- Mobs past 32 blocks skip armor, held items and other extra layers. Players always keep theirs.
- A dropped stack past 16 blocks is drawn as one item instead of a pile.
- Items on the ground and in frames past 20 blocks are drawn flat: a sword is normally a front, a back and a tiny face for every pixel edge, and from far away those edges are a pixel wide. Block items like stairs keep every face.
- While you zoom, every distance stretches with the zoom, so what you look at keeps its detail.
Everything else
- At most 4,000 particles of one kind instead of 16,384, so explosions and farms cannot flood the screen.
- Your game skips entity collision checks for dropped items and XP orbs. The server still does them; in a pile of items that check costs a lot.
- On the server, items merge from 1.5 blocks apart and XP orbs from 2 (vanilla: 0.5), so farms keep fewer entities alive.
- 30 FPS while the game window is not focused. Vanilla only slows down a minimized game.
Benchmark
Bread off and on were measured in the same run, 2 x 20 seconds each, in a test base with 1,332 item frames, 300 armored mobs, 1,500 dropped stacks and 300 signs at 10 to 120 blocks. In a normal world with little going on the gain is smaller.
Zoom
Hold C to zoom (change the key in Controls). Scroll while zooming to go from 1.5x to 50x; the hotbar does not scroll. The zoom eases in and out and the mouse slows down with it.
FPS counter and /bread
/bread fps shows your FPS in a corner: green at 60 and up, yellow at 30, red below. /bread opens a menu with buttons, /bread info shows what Bread skipped in the last frame, and /bread toggle and /bread set change any setting. These are client commands and work on any server.
Tweaks
- Right-click harvest: right-click a grown crop (wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroot, torchflower, nether wart) to harvest it and replant it.
- Double doors open and close together. Sneak to open just one.
- Ladders: click a ladder with a ladder to place one at the bottom of the column, or at the top when you look up.
- Bone meal grows sugar cane and cactus by one block, up to the normal height of 3.
- Shovel: right-click a dirt path or empty farmland to turn it back into dirt.
- Villagers and wandering traders can be put on a lead.
- Feather Falling boots do not trample farmland.
- Snow golems: right-click a sheared one with a carved pumpkin to give it back.
The tweaks run on the server, so in multiplayer the server needs Bread. In singleplayer they always work.
