Better Pets FAQ

Do players need to install it?

No. Better Pets runs on the server only. Players with a plain vanilla client get the whole thing: the list, the clickable buttons, the glow and the arrow. In singleplayer, install it like any other mod (plus Mycel).

My old pets are missing from the list.

The server can only see animals in loaded chunks. A pet you tamed before installing the mod is added the first time its chunk loads, so walk past your base once. After that it stays in the list even when you leave.

Why does the list say "(2 h ago)"?

That pet is in an unloaded chunk, so the list shows where it was when it was last seen, two hours ago. Pets do not wander while their chunk is unloaded, so the spot is still right unless something moved it.

Why can't I call, rename or give a far-away pet?

Those need the actual animal, and the server only has it while its chunk is loaded. Use /pets find: the arrow leads you to the last known spot, and once you are close the pet is loaded and every command works.

Can I give my pet a colored name?

Yes. /pets name understands both & color codes (&b&lBiscuit, &#ff55aaRex) and MiniMessage tags (<red>, <gradient:gold:red>, <rainbow>), even mixed. See features for the full list.

Can other players see or control my pets?

No. /pets only ever shows and acts on your own pets. Giving a pet away is the only way it changes owner.

Can I still hurt my own pet on purpose?

Yes, sneak while attacking. Otherwise your hits, arrows, tridents and sweeps leave your pets alone. Pets of other players are not protected from you, and server operators can turn the protection off with protectFromOwner.

Does it work with horses and llamas?

Yes, every tamed animal with an owner: horses, donkeys, mules, llamas, camels, nautiluses, and modded tamables. Sitting only applies to animals that can sit.

Why does a pet on my lead suddenly appear next to me?

That is the strong lead at work: instead of letting the lead snap when the pet falls behind by 12 blocks, the pet is pulled to you at 8. Turn it off with strongLeads if you prefer vanilla leads.

Where is the pet list stored?

In the world folder, <world>/data/betterpets.json. It moves with the world when you copy or back it up. Deleting it is harmless: the list fills up again as pets are seen.

Can I turn it off without uninstalling?

Yes. Set enabled to false in config/betterpets.json and run /mycel reload betterpets. Single features have their own switches; see configuration.
